Read the story
On Thursday afternoon, Nadia arrived at the shared workshop carrying a box of repaired lamps. Usually, her colleague Ellis helped her clear a table before the public session began. That day he stayed beside the window, turning an empty cup between his hands. Nadia almost asked why he looked so miserable. Instead, she put down the box and noticed that the room was unusually noisy. Three volunteers were testing radios, and someone was moving chairs across the wooden floor.
Nadia approached slowly and asked whether Ellis wanted company or a little space. He said that company was fine, but he did not feel like explaining much. She accepted this and sat in the other chair. After a moment, she mentioned that she could handle the welcome desk if he preferred a quieter job. Ellis explained that several difficult things had happened that week. Nothing required an immediate solution at the workshop; he simply had less energy for conversation than usual.
Nadia wanted to encourage him, but she remembered how uncomfortable she had felt when someone once told her to cheer up. She did not know what his week had contained, and she did not need to guess. She asked if sorting replacement cables would suit him. It was a familiar task that could be done at the window table. Ellis agreed, provided that he could stop early. They decided to check their plan together after the first hour rather than promise a full afternoon.
When another volunteer asked about the change, Nadia said only that they had exchanged jobs. She left Ellis to decide what he wanted to share. Later, a visitor complained about waiting for help with a broken clock. Nadia explained the queue and gave the visitor a realistic waiting time. She did not use Ellis as an explanation. During a quiet moment, she brought water to the window table and asked whether their arrangement was still working. Ellis said it was, although he would leave before closing.
At the end of the session, Ellis thanked her for making the afternoon manageable. Nadia had not found a clever answer to his difficult week. What mattered was that her questions had allowed him to choose. As she packed the remaining lamps, she realised that care could be practical and modest: a quieter table, a clear agreement, and permission to say no. Next Thursday, she would ask how the new arrangement had worked before assuming he needed it again.
A conversation to practise
Nadia: Would you like company or a quiet moment?
Ellis: Some company, but I would rather not explain.
Nadia: Of course. I could cover the welcome desk.
Ellis: Thank you. Sorting cables would suit me today.
