Your goal
Describe a learning goal and choose a small action to reach it.
Read the story
Nora helps at a neighbourhood repair table on Saturdays. Visitors bring bags, lamps, and small pieces of furniture. Nora writes their names in a book and shows them where to sit. She enjoys meeting people, but she often needs help when a visitor speaks English. She knows many words for tools. However, she finds it difficult to ask clear questions about a problem. Before the next repair day, she decides to make a learning plan.
At first, Nora writes a very large goal in her notebook: learn English. She looks at the page and does not know where to begin. Her neighbour Luis asks what she wants to do at the table. Nora thinks about the visitors and changes her goal. By Saturday, she wants to ask three useful questions in English without reading her notebook. She wants to ask what the object is, what is wrong with it, and when the problem started.
Nora chooses one short action for each evening. On Monday, she finds simple question forms in her course notes. On Tuesday, she says the questions aloud while she prepares dinner. On Wednesday, Luis plays a visitor with a broken chair. Nora asks her questions, listens to his answers, and writes down one missing word. Their practice takes ten minutes. Nora does not understand every word Luis says, but she gets the information she needs to show him the right table.
On Friday, Nora checks her progress. She puts her notebook under a plate and asks the three questions again. She remembers two easily, but she forgets part of the third. Instead of starting a new list, she practises that question twice and tries again later. She also prepares a polite request for help. Her plan includes a clear goal, a small action, and a way to check the result. It now feels possible to finish it.
On Saturday, a visitor brings a small wooden box with a loose lid. Nora asks her three questions. The visitor answers slowly, and Nora takes him to Luis. Afterwards, she writes a short note about what worked. Next week, she wants to explain where visitors can leave their bags. She keeps her old questions for a quick review. For Nora, a finished goal is a useful step towards the next one, and her notebook shows the steps she can already take.
