The Poster That Did Not Work

Ada listens to a neighbour interpret her revised tool-exchange poster while Malik helps clarify a rule.
Reflecting on an earlier result can guide a revision you can test.

Your goal

Reflect on a past result with the third conditional and plan a revision.

Read the story

Ada designed a poster for a neighbourhood tool exchange and felt proud when the first copies arrived. The colours matched the painted doors of the meeting hall, and a large drawing showed a watering can beside a drill. She pinned copies in shops and sent an image to the residents group. On Saturday, only four people came, carrying tools they hoped to exchange. Ada had expected twenty. As she stacked the unused cups, she began calling the event a failure and her own work useless.

The organiser, Malik, agreed that the result was disappointing, but he asked her to describe exactly what had happened. Four people had come, two useful exchanges had taken place, and many neighbours had not attended. These facts did not explain the low attendance. Ada first blamed the illustration, which suddenly seemed childish to her. Malik suggested checking what readers had understood before redesigning it. They asked five nearby shopkeepers whether they had seen the poster and what information they remembered from it.

Three remembered the picture but thought the event was a sale. One had not noticed the date, which appeared in small letters below the drawing. Another had understood the exchange but assumed that electrical tools were not allowed. Ada compared these answers with the poster. It had never clearly explained the rules, and the date was difficult to find. If she had asked a few readers to interpret a draft, she would have discovered those problems earlier. That thought was uncomfortable because it pointed to a missed opportunity she could name.

However, it also gave her a revision she could make. She moved the date beside the title and added a short explanation of what visitors could bring. Before printing again, she showed the new version to people who had not attended. Instead of asking whether they liked it, she asked them to explain the event in their own words. Their answers revealed one remaining ambiguity about damaged items. Malik clarified the rule, and Ada changed the wording. The second poster was less decorative but easier to use.

The next exchange attracted eleven people. Ada was pleased, although she knew that the weather, the date, and personal commitments could also affect attendance. She could not prove that every extra visitor came because of the redesign. What she could show was that test readers now understood the invitation. She kept both posters in a folder with the questions she had asked. The first result remained disappointing, but it no longer served as a judgement on her ability. It had become a specific record of decisions she could learn to improve.

A conversation to practise

Ada: If I had tested the draft, I would have noticed the problem.

Malik: What can we check before printing again?

Ada: I will ask readers to explain the invitation.

Malik: Then we can revise the parts they misunderstand.

Understand the story

  1. Why does Malik ask for facts about the first event?
  2. What do the shopkeepers misunderstand?
  3. What can Ada verify after revising the poster?

Practise the language

  1. Complete using check: If we had ___ the date, we would have corrected it.
  2. Complete using would and notice: If I had read it, I ___ the error.
  3. Rewrite as a third conditional beginning If: We did not ask, so we did not learn the rule.
