Your goal
Explain a simple mental model, check its limits, and describe results with if.
Read the story
Ravi starts helping at a community book exchange. People leave books they no longer need and choose others to take home. The room has four shelves and a desk near the entrance. Ravi wants to explain the shelves in English without asking the organiser each time. At home, he arranges his own books by size, so he expects the exchange to work in the same way. Tall books must go on one shelf, he thinks, and small books must go on another.
During his first hour, Ravi puts a tall book about cooking beside a large book of travel photographs. A visitor looks for recipes and cannot find the cooking book. Ravi feels embarrassed because he wants to be helpful. He asks the organiser, Hana, how the shelves work. She shows him four handwritten labels: stories, practical guides, travel, and local information. Size is useful when checking whether a book fits, but it does not explain the main arrangement of this room.
Hana calls Ravi’s first idea a mental model: a simple picture of how something works. Ravi compares it to a map. A map helps you choose a route, but it does not show every stone on the road. His size model helped him organise his own narrow cupboard. Here, visitors usually ask about subjects. He needs a different model for a different job. He draws four boxes on a page and writes one shelf label inside each box, leaving space for examples.
Ravi checks his new model with three books. If a book explains how to repair a chair, it goes with practical guides. If it describes a journey through several towns, it goes with travel. Then he finds a story about a cook who visits another country. It includes food and travel, but it is still a story. The boxes do not answer every question on their own. Ravi reads the cover and asks Hana before choosing the stories shelf. He adds this example to his page.
Before the exchange closes, Ravi gives the page to another helper, Beth. She uses it to return two books, then asks where to put a local walking guide. They check the labels together and choose local information. Ravi writes a note beside that box. His learning goal is the same, but his picture of the shelves is better. He reviews the steps from his earlier lessons: set a goal, name a feeling, choose a response, check the evidence, and give the task his attention.
A conversation to practise
Ravi: I thought the books were arranged by size.
Hana: Here, we usually arrange them by subject.
Ravi: If a book tells a story, it goes on the stories shelf.
Hana: Yes. Check the cover if you are uncertain.
