A Book for the Rainy Bus

Rosa reads a slim novel on a rainy bus with her vocabulary notebook closed on her lap.
Choose a reading approach that fits what you want to enjoy.

Your goal

Explain reading preferences and give reasons with because and so.

Read the story

On rainy evenings, Rosa waits for a bus outside the indoor market where she works. She usually fills the wait by looking at delivery messages, even after her shift has ended. One evening, her phone battery runs out, and she notices a small book exchange inside the station. The shelf contains gardening guides, travel essays, and several short novels. Rosa chooses a slim book about a woman who runs a village laundry. She likes the cover, but she also checks the first page before taking it.

Rosa has not finished an English book for pleasure in a long time. In her classes, she reads carefully and writes down unfamiliar vocabulary. She assumes that reading outside class must follow the same pattern. On the bus, she opens her notebook after the second sentence. By the next stop, she has copied seven words and has almost forgotten what is happening in the story. She closes the notebook because she wants to discover why a parcel has arrived at the laundry without an address.

The following evening, Rosa tries a different approach. She reads two pages before deciding whether to check a word. When an unfamiliar expression does not prevent her from following the action, she continues. When a word seems important, she looks at the surrounding sentences first. She writes down only two expressions to check at home. The story becomes easier to follow because she gives the events her attention. She is reading to enjoy a particular story, and she can choose when to study its language.

At lunch on Friday, her colleague Ben asks about the book. Rosa explains the missing address and the unusual parcel, but she does not reveal what happens next. Ben prefers accounts of real journeys, so he recommends a collection about train trips. Rosa says that she enjoys ordinary settings where a small event changes a familiar day. They agree to exchange recommendations rather than give each other reading deadlines. Before returning to work, Rosa tries to recall the two expressions in her notebook and uses one to describe the market.

Rosa finishes the laundry story the next week. Some pages were more interesting than others, and she skipped a long description of the building. At the station, she returns the book and opens the train collection. Its first chapter is longer, so she checks whether the style suits her. She reads three pages while the rain taps the window. Her bus arrives before she finishes the scene. This time, she places a ticket between the pages because she wants to continue the journey tomorrow.

A conversation to practise

Ben: Why did you choose that story?

Rosa: I like ordinary settings because I can imagine being there.

Ben: I prefer journeys, so I brought this train collection.

Rosa: Let me try the first page before I choose.

Understand the story

  1. Why does Rosa first visit the book exchange?
  2. What goes wrong when Rosa copies every unfamiliar word?
