A Maker on Ordinary Days

Omar explains the wooden stand he made while Ada examines it at the neighbourhood cinema.
Everyday making offers concrete habits to describe when talking about who you are.

Your goal

Describe identity through everyday habits using adverbs of frequency.

Read the story

Omar works at the ticket desk of a neighbourhood cinema. When people ask about his interests, he usually talks about films. He also enjoys making things from leftover wood, but he rarely mentions that part of his life. His projects are small: a shelf for postcards, a box for keys, or a simple plant stand. He thinks the word maker belongs to people with large workshops and expensive equipment. His own work happens on a folding table behind his kitchen door.

One Sunday, the cinema manager asks staff to help prepare a display for a local film weekend. They need a place for programmes and visitor maps. Omar offers to bring a wooden stand that he made the previous winter. At first, he describes it as just something from home. His colleague Ada asks how he planned the size and joined the pieces. As he explains, he realises that he has made many small decisions with care. The stand does a useful job, even without a perfect finish.

During the weekend, Ada invites Omar to a community making session. He expects everyone to have impressive projects, but one person is repairing a drawer and another is measuring fabric for a bag. Omar helps a visitor attach a loose handle. The visitor speaks English, so Omar checks the word screwdriver in a notebook before he explains the next step. He remembers a learning activity from his English course: attempt the word first, then check it. Knowing every word is not a requirement for taking part.

After the session, Omar writes a description of his ordinary week for an English assignment. He usually sketches an idea on Sunday. He sometimes visits the timber shop after work, and he often saves short pieces that other people do not need. He never uses the noisy electric saw late at night because his neighbours live close by. These sentences show a regular part of his life. He does not build something every day, but he returns to the activity whenever he has a suitable project.

The next time a visitor asks what he does outside the cinema, Omar says that he makes useful wooden objects. He still works at the same small table and still makes mistakes with measurements. However, he no longer waits for a bigger room before describing his interest honestly. Ada suggests putting a small label beside his stand at the next event. Omar agrees, then adds a practical note to his Sunday list: measure the space for a second stand before buying any wood.

A conversation to practise

Ada: Do you often make things at home?

Omar: Yes, I usually work at my folding table.

Ada: Are your projects always large?

Omar: No, I usually make small, useful objects.

Understand the story

  1. Why does Omar rarely call himself a maker at first?
  2. What does Omar bring to the cinema event?
  3. Why does Omar never use the electric saw late at night?

Practise the language

  1. Put the words in order: usually / Omar / on Sunday / sketches.
  2. Put the words in order: always / are / his tools / ready.
  3. Rewrite using never instead of does not ever: He does not ever use the saw at midnight.
