Read the story
Malik arrives at a community kitchen with a bag of tomatoes. He has agreed to help prepare a shared lunch. He wants to learn how to describe food in English, so he plans to name five ingredients during the morning. It is a clear, small goal. However, when he sees the busy room, he stops near the door. Everyone seems to have a job already. Malik tells the organiser, Eva, that he feels bad, but this does not explain very much.
Eva gives him a place at the vegetable table and asks a simple question about his morning. Malik thinks before he answers. He is not angry, and he is not sad. He is nervous because he does not know the other helpers. He is also disappointed because his friend cannot come. These are two different feelings with two different reasons. When he names them, Eva understands his situation better. She introduces him to Jo, who is washing carrots beside him.
Jo is quiet while they work. At first, Malik thinks Jo is unhappy with him. Then Jo explains that she feels worried because she cannot find the recipe card. She needs to check how many carrots to use. Malik helps her look under the empty bowls. They find the card beside a bag of rice. Jo feels relieved, and Malik learns a useful new word. Her quiet voice was not a message about him. He is glad that he asked a question.
Later, Malik carries a bowl of chopped tomatoes to the main table. Eva thanks him and asks him to describe the food. He remembers four ingredient names, but forgets the English word for one green vegetable. Jo helps him. Malik feels pleased because he can explain most of the bowl. He also feels a little embarrassed about the missing word. He writes both feelings in his notebook. A good moment can include more than one emotion, and he does not need to choose only one.
Before lunch, the helpers sit together for a short break. Malik checks his original goal and remembers all five ingredient names without his notes. He then adds a new question to his notebook: how do I feel, and why? He does not plan to tell everyone every feeling. He wants to choose words that fit when he needs to explain himself. At the end of the morning, the busy kitchen is still noisy, but it is no longer a room full of strangers.
