A Table with Enough Space

Mei tests a plain sample notebook at a cleared table with the necessary materials within reach.
Consider whether the space and materials are enough for the current task.

Your goal

Evaluate what is necessary using too and enough.

Read the story

Mei made small notebooks at a table in the corner of her flat. Over time, the table had become a display of possible projects: patterned paper, spare ribbon, stamps, envelopes, and several boxes of unusual buttons. She enjoyed all these materials, but preparing to work had become difficult. Before she could cut a cover, she had to move things onto a chair. When a friend requested six plain notebooks for a reading group, Mei could not find enough clear space to begin.

Her first idea was to buy a larger table. She measured the room and discovered that a new table would block part of the doorway. It would also cost more than the notebook order would pay. Mei sat beside her materials and considered what the order actually required. The group wanted strong covers, simple pages, and names written clearly on the front. Buttons and decorative stamps were interesting, but they did not help with this particular task. More space was only one possible answer.

Mei put the required materials on a cloth and moved the other boxes into a cupboard. She did not decide that decoration was useless. Instead, she gave the current project a clear boundary. The paper cutter was close enough to reach, the pages were arranged by size, and the finished covers had their own small area. She made one sample notebook before cutting the remaining covers. This helped her check that the chosen materials were suitable and that the process was easy enough to repeat.

Her friend visited the next evening and noticed the plain sample. At first, she suggested adding a ribbon to every notebook. Mei asked what the ribbon would do. A bookmark might be useful, but the group had not requested one, and the available ribbon was too short for all six books. They agreed to leave it out. They spent the saved time checking the names and testing whether each cover opened comfortably. The simpler design still needed careful work and attention to small details.

By Friday, all six notebooks were ready. Mei packed them in a clean box and wrote down the steps she had followed. Her table was not empty, but it contained enough room for the next action. She kept a separate list of ideas for future projects so that choosing one design did not mean losing every other possibility. When she looked at the cupboard, she felt no need to finish everything at once. For this order, enough had a specific meaning, and she had learned to recognise it.

A conversation to practise

Friend: Is there enough ribbon for six books?

Mei: No, it is too short.

Friend: Are the plain covers strong enough?

Mei: Yes. Let us check the names next.

Understand the story

  1. Why did Mei reject a larger table?
  2. What did the reading group request?
  3. How did Mei keep her other ideas?

Practise the language

  1. Put enough in the correct place: The cover is strong.
  2. Complete with too or enough: The ribbon cannot reach; it is ___ short.
  3. Put in order: space / enough / We / have.
