The Honest Window Display

Beatrice tests a green suitcase as Priya points out its noisy wheel and repaired handle.
Clear reasons and an acknowledged limitation help someone make an informed choice.

Your goal

Persuade with clear reasons while acknowledging a limitation.

Read the story

Marco managed a small shop that sold repaired bags and secondhand travel equipment. When a street festival was announced, he invited his assistant Priya to design the window display. She suggested featuring a green suitcase with a strong frame and a repaired handle. It cost less than most of their other cases, but one wheel made a clicking sound. Marco thought they could place it behind the display table, where visitors would see its attractive colour without trying to move it.

Priya understood the temptation. The shop needed a successful weekend, and the suitcase had occupied valuable shelf space for months. However, hiding the wheel would make the display persuasive for the wrong reason. She asked Marco what kind of customer would actually benefit from that case. Together, they pictured someone making occasional car journeys, carrying theatre costumes, or storing equipment at home. A traveller who crossed busy stations every week would probably need something else. That distinction gave Priya a more useful starting point.

She prepared a card describing the solid frame, generous space, repaired handle, and noisy wheel. Beneath it, she listed the price and invited visitors to test the case on the shop floor. Although Marco worried that the fault would discourage everyone, he agreed to try her approach until lunchtime. Priya also offered to handle questions so that customers could consider the information without pressure. Her aim was to make the choice understandable, not to make refusal awkward. She left room beside the case for people to walk away easily.

During the festival, a costume maker named Beatrice stopped at the display. She needed a case for moving fabric between a cupboard and her car. Priya showed her how the handle had been repaired and pointed out the clicking wheel before discussing the price. Beatrice tested it twice. She asked whether the wheel could be replaced later, and Priya admitted that the shop could not promise a matching part. Beatrice took a photograph of the measurements and went to inspect the storage space in her car.

She returned after lunch and bought the suitcase. Marco was pleased, but Priya did not present the sale as proof that honesty always produces a quick reward. Several other visitors had decided against it, for sensible reasons. What the approach had produced was a suitable match and a conversation without hidden information. For the next display, Marco asked Priya to include strengths and limitations from the beginning. They could still make an attractive case for a product while leaving the final judgement with the person who would use it.

A conversation to practise

Priya: Although the wheel clicks, the frame is strong.

Beatrice: Could I try moving it?

Priya: Certainly. We cannot promise a replacement wheel.

Beatrice: Thanks. I will check my car before deciding.
