Read the story
When the upstairs office became empty, the residents of Cedar Court had several ideas for using it. The room belonged to the building association, and its rent had previously paid for minor repairs. Now the association could afford to keep it for shared activities, provided that residents agreed on a purpose and a modest budget. At the first meeting, everyone supported the idea of a useful space. Trouble began when they tried to explain what useful meant. Their shared word concealed several different priorities.
Rafi wanted desks where people could study or complete forms. Celia imagined a lively room for making decorations and sharing practical skills. Another resident proposed renting it for private celebrations to recover some income. Each suggestion sounded reasonable in isolation. Together, they created an impossible timetable and a shopping list beyond the budget. As secretary, Celia started writing a list of objects: chairs, lamps, cupboards, a kettle. Then she stopped. Choosing furniture would not help until they understood what they wanted the room to make possible.
At the next meeting, she asked each person to describe one moment when the room could matter. Rafi described trying to complete an application in a noisy kitchen. A resident named Alba described owning a sewing machine but having no table large enough to cut fabric. Someone else mentioned wanting to meet neighbours without having to buy anything. These examples changed the conversation. Instead of defending labels such as study room or social room, people began discussing access, quiet, affordability, and the chance to share equipment.
They could not satisfy every preference. After examining the budget, they chose two large folding tables, ordinary chairs, and a lockable cupboard. They reserved quiet sessions so that residents could work without interruption, while keeping two evenings for shared projects. Private celebrations would wait until they understood cleaning costs and booking demands. Celia wrote the reasons beside each decision. The cupboard protected shared supplies; the folding tables allowed different activities; the free booking system kept participation affordable. The objects now served a purpose that people could question and understand.
Three months later, the room still had disagreements and an occasionally crowded calendar. It had not turned a group of neighbours into people with identical priorities. However, when someone requested expensive new chairs, the association had a useful starting question: which agreed purpose would the purchase support? Celia found that this question made discussion less personal. Values were becoming visible through ordinary decisions about time, money, and space. Meaning had not arrived as a perfect statement above the door; it was taking shape in how the room was used.
A conversation to practise
Celia: What would the cupboard help us do?
Rafi: We could lock it to protect shared supplies.
Celia: And why do we need quiet sessions?
Rafi: So that residents can work without interruption.
